Micky van de Ven found the net on two occasions as Spurs extended their unbeaten run in away games in the top division and handed Everton their initial loss at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed their historic home behind after 133 years at the conclusion of the previous campaign.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman struck on two occasions from corners in the opening 45 minutes to place their strong form at jeopardy, and they were unable to turn it around before the midfielder - set up by ex-Everton forward Richarlison - nodded in a third to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien thought he had levelled the tally a short while after the defender's first goal, directing a powerful header past the Spurs keeper from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, missed a handful of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of fine saves to guarantee the London club went five matches on the road without defeat in the Premier League.

But the VAR stepped in, instructing Craig Pawson to review the score on the screen and the official ruled that Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were in offside positions and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

This victory elevates Thomas Frank's team into third place in the Premier League, five points off local foes and leaders the Gunners.

Everton stay 14th and are half a dozen points clear of the drop zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven excels in duties at both ends of pitch

Following a uninspiring midweek performance in the European competition against the French side, where they managed a mere two shots on target, Frank chose the French striker up front instead of ex-Everton forward Richarlison.

The new arrival was unable to influence the game before being replaced for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Centre-back Van de Ven converted into an attacking force to be feared.

Tottenham's first goal came from a cleverly executed set-piece play, with the midfielder directing the ball back across the face of goal for an unmarked Van de Ven to head home.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as skipper in the Argentine's absence - added his second in added time as he outjumped Jordan Pickford to head home.

The Dutchman was just as outstanding in defensive duties, partnering effectively with his defensive colleague as the pair handled excellently with the 34 crosses sent their way by the opposition.

Everton analysis: Toffees lacking finishing touch

Everton's recent stadium had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the freshness may have faded somewhat and supporters flocked to the exits after the midfielder's third for Tottenham.

The end in the team's unbeaten home run will not be a major worry for David Moyes, but their striker situation are.

Beto and the other striker - the Everton's pair of recognised strikers - had scored just a single goal between them before the weekend's outing.

And they were failed to contribute to that miserable record on a wet and gloomy night on Merseyside.

The striker's performance was epitomized when he chose to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from near the goal, despite having space and time to readjust for a more conventional attempt that would have tested the keeper.

Barry, as well, was unable to make an impact after replacing Beto in the 65th minute.

It was not for a lack of chance. Most of Everton's attacks came through Grealish and the forward, who tirelessly whipped threatening balls into the Spurs box.

The Toffees: The team travel to Sunderland in the top flight on early November at 20:00 GMT.
