A novel accolade from the interdisciplinary festival Starmus aims to motivate individuals to make a difference. A gathering related to the Starmus festival. The medal will be given to pay tribute to the celebrated scientist and conservationist who died recently. It is designed to celebrate those who protect our planet's biodiversity. Award Details The inaugural winners are slated for announcement at the upcoming Starmus event in the Canary Islands, scheduled from 17–22 October the coming year. It was shared that Goodall, who was a Starmus advisory board member, had endorsed the award’s creation. “The concept behind this award, and Starmus being entrusted with organising it, is Jane’s,” a statement said. “She expressed that she wanted for this to occur. This is likely because of the unique connection she had with us.” “The Starmus Jane Goodall Earth medal will recognize ongoing initiatives carried out to build an environment a better place for people, animals and the environment and provide encouragement to continue that work,” commented a relative. Structure and Vision A co-founder of Starmus stated that the medal – which was announced at a scientific institution – would probably encompass various fields. “It’s going to be modeled after the Stephen Hawking medal honoring scientific outreach that we created exactly 10 years ago,” he explained. Jane Goodall was a recipient of that very medal. Expressing concern on the outlook for Earth, a prominent voice stated, “Frankly, it is difficult to feel hopeful. Certain policies globally is conducting a war on science. This situation really cripples the world’s efforts.” “To be honest, things don’t look very good so we have to begin to reconsidering, with greater urgency about the consequences of human activity. This concern encompasses not only climate change, but also the entire manner in which we interact with nature.” A Call to Action Therefore, it was noted it was an opportune moment to follow Goodall’s example. “I think that in bestowing the prize, the focus will be on this core philosophy that Jane embodied – that was her priority, to transform how we regard fellow creatures with which we share the planet.” A major topic today involves the spread of misinformation. The central topic of the upcoming festival will be “the pursuit of factual understanding”. “We realised that factual reality has become contested where political interests are involved. This is a very dangerous thing,” it was said. “The science of climate remains a scientific discipline; you cannot allow interference from politics in climate science.” Hope and Determination The aspiration is that the medal can motivate action. “The purpose is inspiring individuals to participate and to care and to work in that direction, really. Whether or not we feel hopeful, we must focus on doing our utmost,” it was added. “Accept the possibility of failure, but you still continue striving towards succeeding.” A family member engaged in conservation work expressed optimism that “with guidance and when empowered, people are capable of being responsible caretakers of Earth”, citing the programs of an institute that, in addition to its projects, helps the next generation get involved with their community, animals, and the natural world. “As my late grandmother often reminded us, the choices we make each day are significant and it is up to us what type of impact we choose to create,” it was stated. “There is still time and this medal will give encouragement and raise awareness regarding the positive actions that are being undertaken.”
